Offical of the University

Ferenc Mádl started teaching at the University of ELTE’s Law School in Budapest after his 1967 trip to the United States. He was appointed to a half-time and then full-time position in the Department of Civil Law, headed by Professor Miklós Világhy, and prepared to devote all his time to teaching and research. The University, however, was keen to benefit from the new lecturer’s experience gained at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Thus, in the early 1970s, in addition to teaching, Mádl took over the management of the Department of International Relations at University’s Central Administration, whose responsibilities overlapped strongly with his previous foreign affairs duties at the Bureau of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. It quickly became clear that Mádl had, in addition to his language skills, an extensive network of national and international contacts, which he was happy to put at the service of his alma mater.

Mádl’s career as a university official was therefore fast-tracked, and between 1974 and 1977 he also held the post of Vice-Rector for International and Cultural Affairs at the University of ELTE. His work was recognised by the University in 1977 with the award of the Eötvös Medal.
